How Much Control Over Your Life Do You Have?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve been reflecting for some time now on the thought of early 20th century meta physician Thomas Troward.

I find his works very valuable.  To take the effort and read them is mind altering.  To be patient with his writings and to let them grow on you is an experience worth the effort.

I’ve been reflecting on an essay of his called “Entering into the Spirit of It.”

If you enter into the spirit of a game you really let yourself get into it, as any avid sports fan will attest to.

So Troward uses that concept of ‘getting into it” as a means of encouraging spiritual growth.

He writes: “To enter into the spirit of anything, then is to make yourself one in thought with the creative principle that is at the center of it; and therefore why not go to the center of all things at once, and enter into the Spirit of Life?”

Just think about that for a minute.  Get into the ’source’ of things and everything will follow from there.

So Troward further writes: “Do you ask where to find it?”  and he answers: “In your self.”

Then he says that once you realize it in your self the way you reach that spirit, to get into it is by: “affirming this in your thoughts…and as this awareness grows it will become a living force within you”.

In order to apply that here is my affirmative prayer for today:

I have the power to self reflect.  I have the power to think.  I have the power to speak and to express my thoughts and ideas.  I am the channel of the Spirit.

I am One with Spirit.  Spirit already knows this.  I am affirming that “I” know this.

I am the one writing this.  My insight sees this.  I am One with and in Spirit.  I am therefore One with infinite Wisdom.

I am Power.  I am imagination.  Rather, I am the power behind imagination and voice and strength.  I am the Mind of God.  I am the will of God.

The current of thoughts flowing through me is mine to choose thoughts from.  I am the thinker.  I use my will to  select and give direction to the thoughts I choose.

I am the director.  I am infinite Wisdom and Power.  I am express  ideas in words, art and technology.

I affirm the Life I am.

I affirm the Light I am.

I affirm each of my faculties as means of expression.

I am in human form to express myself…that is…to give expression as myself — of God.  I am One with/in Spirit.

I use my faith, strength, power to select, my love, and wisdom, my voice, my imagination, my understanding, my will, my power to order things wisely and my power to affirm the good and eliminate that which does not serve me.

I have the power to use my creative principle for the highest good for myself and others.

I daily make my self new.  I regenerate my thought and energy, my focus.  I regenerate my self into the awareness that I am One with the ‘Creative Principle, the Life at the Center of all.

I am happy, healthy, wise, supported and defended as I move into increasing awareness of my oneness with source.

That is my affirmation for the day.  If you want to hear me read relevant text from Troward’s essay ‘Entering into the Spirit’ just click on the audio player below.

Discipline– A Definition

April 7, 2009

This morning I was listening to Bob Proctor in his Six minutes to success program.

He gave me a great definition of “Discipline”.

It goes like this: discipline is something that is consciously chosen, ardently desired and patiently persisted in.

  • Consciously chosen
  • Ardently desired
  • Patiently persisted in

In other words discipline will happen if you choose to do something consciously because you really and truly (ardently) desire it and then you take off after it and patiently persist in your process… without judgment on yourself but with affirmation of yourself for ‘wanting’ something, having the guts to choose what your want and then persistently staying with the process to the accomplishment of it.

Just something to think about today.

Peace

Norm

Get Into The Spirit of It

April 5, 2009

Yesterday I wrote about expressing yourself.

I left an audio at the bottom of the post of an Essay by Thomas Troward called “Yourself”.

The first line of the audio goes: “I want to talk to you about the liveliness there is in being you.”

Isn’t it true that when we are truly ourselves we feel a liveliness?  People might say something like : I feel so alive.

This is a very important principle in the teaching of this meta-physician of the early 20th century.

In yet another essay, Troward, talks about getting into the spirit of a thing.  By so doing we experience  liveliness.

There are expressions like-  ‘get into the spirit of the game’.  That is a call to get very much ‘into’ it isn’t? Getting into the spirit of a game is to throw yourself into it with abandon.  Its not sitting on the sideline with your hands in your pockets and looking half interest.

No!

To get into the spirit of a thing is to really get into the swing and the flow of it.

The result, is to touch liveliness.

According to Troward liveliness is the essence of spirit.  We sometimes hear the expression; that was a very spirited conversation, meaning that it was very lively and involved all of the energy of those taking part in it.

Thus Troward states that to connect with Spirit is to connect with that which is most alive.

I venture to say the same about connecting with the essential person that I am.  It is ‘aliveness’.

We can theorize about a lot of things and not really ‘get into’ it.  But, to get in touch with this quality of aliveness, of being alive is the essence of life.  That quality of aliveness is at the core of who we are isn’t it?

To be a person is not some idea.  The person I truly am is aliveness.

And so Troward reminds his readers that the Spirit is not some abstract idea or system, but  is the very Principle of Aliveness.  To grow spiritually is to come into conscious contact, more and more, with the aliveness of Spirit.

So lets listen to an excerpt from a Troward essay called: “Entering into the spirit of it”.

Express Yourself

April 4, 2009

Today I’m reflecting on how important it is to express one’s self.
Why?
Because it is all there is to do.

But, the expression of the self is, more often than not, blurred.
We grow up sitting down for meals with people who tell us what we ought to do.
We are told what to do all of our years in school.
We are told what to do when we get a job.
Our parents tell us what to do and what is good for us.

We watch television and are influenced by the models we see on the various programs.
We watch movies and here again, certain models, certain ideals are lifted up.

Needless to say who I am gets lost in that process.

Have you ever stopped and wondered why little children are so attractive?
Its because who they are is not yet buried under the piles of should and should not.
Babies or very young children are who they are, period.
Their beauty and spontaneity bubbles up and its a pleasure to be with them and to behold the wonder of who they are.
But then… the years come rolling over them.

And  the sparkle seems to diminish as the knocks of life accumulate.

Then the child starts to think that to be appreciated it must be this or that. “I want to be like this or that rock star to be great”. So it starts to believe it wants to be someone else than itself.
The result: the true self sinks deeper and deeper into the world of I wanta be this or I wanta be that.
Striving becomes a habit.
And the person no longer sounds through with clarity.

Yet, the call is on each of us to ‘express ourselves’. That is the only path of satisfaction.
Yet most people, as Thoreau wrote, ‘live lives of quiet desperation’.

To awaken from that place of despair down under  requires the person to ‘recognize’ or to remember to remember who it is.

The first step to doing that is to stop identifying with the exterior person you have become.
Shift it around. Identify with the Source from where you come. It is an ‘identity shift’ that has to take place.

“Awaken from your slumber by letting Christ shine upon you”, is a scripture passage that means you awaken to your truth when you recognize you are already one with the Source that created you.

Then you can Express Yourself, that is your True Self and not who you have trained yourself to “think” you are.

I’ve included with this post a recording I made of an essay by an early 20th century meta physician named Thomas Troward. It’s here just below. Enjoy.
